The Longest Ride is a novel that was published in September of 2013 by Nicholas Sparks. Later, George Tillman Jr. made a movie based on the novel, released in April of 2015. This is a story focused on the love affair between a former bull-riding champion and a college student. Luke is anxiously preparing to make a comeback as a bull-rider, and Sophia is ready to fulfill her dreams in New York in the art industry. However, two couples lives’ intersect in surprising ways. Their first date connects them to Ira, when they spot his crashed car and rescue him. Sophia saves his box of love letters and the entwining of the couples lives begin. Although their relationships do differ by experience, they’ve each endured happiness and heartache along their long rides to love. George Tillman Jr. does a fantastic job along the lines of following the book precisely, but he changes the sequence of events in a few subtle ways. While going back and forth between the two couples lives, I absolutely fell in love with the way the author captured the love of Ira and his wife perfectly. In the book, Sparks expresses the love and admiration Ira has for his wife Ruth as he recounts their blossoming love. The movie highlights both Ira and Ruth’s struggles and happiest moments in a way that make them seem very honest and realistic, like the type of relationship that we all strive for today. I like how Spark’s allows the reader to be able to visualize and feel the emotion behind the characters by what Ira has written in his love letters to his beloved wife.
