In 1948, when the New Yorker published Shirley Jacksons piece, “The Lottery,” it sparked outrage among readers, but could arguably be known as one of her most famous pieces of writing. In this short story, Shirley Jackson used literally elements such as imagery, diction, and symbolism to foreshadow the negative and harsh ending of the story; the harsh ending that sparked such outrage by society in the 1940’s. One of the main ways Jackson foreshadows the ending and true meaning of her short story, “The Lottery,” is through symbolism. Jackson uses the color black throughout the story.
Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” tells the story of a village during midsummer participating in a ritual that is done every year without question; while this village is trying to become a modern town, it also cannot deal with the changing of the times. The result of this unquestioned ritual is the death of one of the village people as a sacrifice for the entire village’s “benefit”. Many details in this story, such as the time the story is set, the props used during the ritual, the condition of the sacrifices, and the names of the townspeople, illustrate the symbolism intertwined in a story about a ritualistic, but modernizing town. Symbolism is seen from the beginning of the story through the time the lottery takes place on “[t]he morning of June 27th” (Jackson 419).
ch 2016 I think that there are many possible reasons for the town to have the lottery. I think that thinking about this is very interesting. It is also a question that can have many different answer depending on how you look at the story. I have brought it down to two possible reasons for all of the city's to be doing the lottery.
The people of a small town gather in the town square on June 27 for the town’s lottery. The story states that the lottery takes longer in other towns, but because there are only 300 people in this village, it only takes two hours. The children, who have just finished school for the summer, run around gathering stones. The children make a pile with the stones in the town square while keeping some in their pockets. While one might think, this story ends with someone winning money from the lottery, but it ends with the winner getting stones thrown at.

The story is set in a nameless town in America, and the lottery is a tradition that has been going on for as long as anyone can remember, though it is never explained how the tradition came about, nor what the purpose of this tradition is. The person who draws the paper with a black dot on it is the winner of the lottery.
The climax of "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is when Tessie reveals the paper with the black dot. With the reveal of the black dot, the villagers begin to surround Tessie and start to stone her to death. The stoning of Tessie Hutchinson reveals that the lottery is a tradition filled with horror and death. Even though many of the villagers voice their opinion against the lottery, they still participate in the activity. Once the tradition of the lottery is finished, all the villagers go back to their normal life and pretend that nothing happened.

Which represents the chance of execution and, following a tradition blindly is dangerous. The story is developed in a specific order, arranging a piece of symbolism right after the other. So that the main theme of shock stands out very well at the end and, emphasizes shock even more because, it was unexpected and revealed at the end. Jackson had put in these pieces of symbolism in this manner in order to lead the audience gradually but, very suddenly into the theme.
