“You used to be much more..."muchier." You've lost your muchness.”, The Mad Hatter to Alice, in the 2010, movie adaption created and directed by Tim Burton. In this adaption to the famous story of Alice in Wonderland, Alice finds herself in a struggle to find herself and who is to become now that is becoming an adult. Tim Burton conveys Alice adventure in finding self through character development and costumes. Alice is thrown into the world of Wonderland where she is expected to save the characters from there. However, throughout the movie, Alice believes everything is a dream and thinks that what is expected of her there, is simply impossible. She has to face the challenges of growing up, finding out who she is, and realizing the reality of her “dream”. Ever since the death of her father, Alice has been living her life the way everybody around her thought best. She had conforming to the ideals of her family and those around her, even though she believed, and wanted, differently. Alice begins to really question herself when she comes faced the decision to marry Hamish Ascot, the son of one her father’s close friends. However, she ran from the lavish engagement party feeling this was not what she truly wanted in life. In wonderland she is faced with having to slay the Jabberwocky and save all the characters she meets in wonderland. The Jabberwocky is a reflection of her life in the “real world” because everybody expects her to do what she is supposedly meant to do, without knowing if it is what she truly wants, or if she can even accomplish it. When Alice comes to the decision to slay the Jabberwocky, it led to her to realizing what she wanted and finding her true self. When Absolem first told Alice she was not the right one, but later told her she was the real Alice, it showed that when they first meet, Alice had this imagination and childlike view on the world.
