Conflict between nations and within nations themselves is never caused by a single reason. This was especially true for World War I. In the years that led up to World War I, the major powers in Europe were Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, and Italy. Great Britain, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente, while Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the Triple Alliance.
