No one can hide from death. “The Masque of the Red Death" is by Edger Allen Poe in the genre of short stories. This story is about a very wealthy man that uses every penny for entertainment. Prince Prospero had the dance to stall time with lots of friends but death eventually caught up with him. This story represents the history of the plague. To enhance his allegory of representing the history of the plague in “The Masque of the Red Death,” Poe expresses that no one can hide from death through his portrayal of Prince Prospero, the clock, and Room 7.

The clock is shown to be a powerful object in this story. Its characteristics are shown by Poe, “It’s pendulum swung to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang” (Poe 83). The clock contains lots of personality including being the main visible object. In this story the ebony clock is the main detail shown, “that the next chiming of the clock should produce in them no similar emotion; and then, after the lapse of sixty minutes, (which embrace three thousand and six hundred seconds of the time that flies), there came yet another chiming of the clock, and then were the same disconcert and tremulousness and meditation as before” (Poe 84). These quotes showed the characteristics of this clock including being the main object noticed. This clock is the main object noticed because it is representing someone’s life span. This causes the clock to be noticed more because it is showing what is left of Prince Prospero’s life. This is why the clock is an important object seen throughout the short story of “The Masque of the Red
