How much can friendship and loyalty really impact a story? In James Dashner's novel The Maze Runner, a group of teenage boys are sent one by one to a place they call The Glade. The boys form a society where they work together to escape the giant maze surrounding them. Despite their situation, the three Gladers show great acts of leadership, loyalty, and alliance. Chuck, Thomas, and Minho put other people's needs in front of their own, they display selfless acts in order to try to save or stand up for their friends. Chuck sacrifices his life in order to save his best friend, Minho stands in alliance with Thomas despite the risks and consequences, and Thomas risks his life to save two boys he barely knows. After not even being in The Glade for a week, Thomas is ready to sacrifice his life to try to save some boys he barely knows. Some people wouldn't risk their lives for someone they've known for years, and Thomas is doing it for two boys he's only known for a couple of days. On page 113, Thomas says, “ ‘I couldn't just sit there and leave you guys out here’ ” (Dashner pg.113). This statement displays the bravery and leadership that Thomas shows throughout the book. After the doors close, trapping them inside The Maze, and Minho has basically pronounced them dead, Thomas still does not give up. As Minho runs into The Maze, Thomas realizes something about himself, “He couldn't leave a friend to die, even someone as cranky as Alby” (Dashner pg.119). Thomas begins to tie Alby up in the ivy in an attempt to hide him from the Grievers. After Alby had been spotted, Thomas used his best effort to divert the Grievers away from Alby, once again risking his life to try to save others. This shows that Thomas is a strong character who displays leadership, bravery, and makes sacrifices for the people he loves, as they would do the same for
