Marguerite van Male, was born as an insignificant girl and her father had longed for her to be a boy. As a consequence, she was overlooked, a disappointment to her father. Marguerite was taught to be a well behaved lady who obeyed her father. However, as her story progresses she becomes extremely stubborn and disobedient, especially after her mother is sent away. She decides that she wants to be a great leader and warrior, but to do this Marguerite must overcome the social norms that have been set by both her superiors and peers. Marguerites first sign of disobedience was when she started to go on improper missions and adventures with three kitchen boys. Her very first mission was ambushing an Italian bank boat. But she once again starts with the Italian sword fighting master, Andrea Tagiaferro. He helps advance her fencing abilities and shows her that it is good to be able to fence with both her right and left hand, even though she was always taught that her left hand was associated with the devil. She takes fifty lessons with master Tagiaferro earning each one, before a fight breaks out between her and her father. Although she is small and quick her father’s strength and training beats her agility and skills.
