Life in the Middle Ages “The Canterbury Tale” has very realistic scenarios that many people can relate too, and struggle with everyday of their lives. This tale talks about the lower class characters who have their struggle just like the high end society. Real life scenarios do not always have logical and organized connections. The human brain has been tested but still cannot manage to understand human kind. In “The Miller’s Tale” there was a friendship that turned into rivalry. This is a problem that comes from many years ago, and continues till today. Friends lose contact for many reason, and even for other people. A character that stood out and did not care on how she was looked at was The Wife of Bath. The wife had to be one of the first outspoken and independent women of their times, she was the one who would represented the women of her time and her character change the world of literature for women. This tells us a lot about the roles men and women had to be in. The wife of Bath and Alison from “The Miller’s Tale” were simply women who acted in a way that was not acceptable, but if it was men doing it the same it would be okay, somewhat like today’s society. “The Wife of Bath" female stereotypes of the Middle Ages was “liberal” unlike most women being anonymous during the Middle Ages, she had a mind of her own and voiced herself. She did not worry about what others would say or thought about her, maybe because she knew that people always. The Wife has a confidant another woman called Alison. Alison is the carpenter’s young wife. She had committed adultery, but she was never punished for what she did. Alison is a lustful young women, and unlike her husband, whose behavior contradicts the description of him. She spend the night with Nicholas in their bed without that much of a fight. Friendship between two individuals that makes a turn for the worse. The Miller’s Tale, gives a story of two friends competing for the same woman, a love triangle. There was a rich old codger who lived in Oxford, with his newly wedded wife and a clerk, whose name was Nicholas. It all started when Nicholas so I say “harassed” Alison to get what he wanted. He said “Unless I have my will with you I’ll die of secret love- O darling, do!”(91) And so it happened that one Saturday. When the old codger was safe away at Osney.(94) However, the wife worried, as her husband was so jealous and protective, it would be difficult to find an opportunity. Nicholas resolved to beguile his master, Nicholas and Alison had agreed on what was to be done.(94). The wife knew exactly of all the wrong she would be doing, and how bad it would get if they were to get caught. Sometimes the people closest to you hurt you the most, simply because you never imagined them being the ones to hurt you. For some reason we choose to be more upset with one person then the other. In this situation the carpenter wife was not penalized for cheating on her husband. He could live and sleep with her even after what she did and with no penalties.
