In W.W. Jacobs’ story The Monkey's Paw, the author uses foreshadowing as a tool to create suspense. The first example of foreshadowing is when Sergeant Major Morris warns the whites about the consequences of using the monkey's paw. This happens after Sergeant Major Morris visits the whites and tells them the tale of the magical monkey’s paw. Mr. and Ms. White are unsure about the paw at first. The Sergeant then tries to burn the paw, but Mr. White stops him.

There are two different adaptations of the story, the original and the video adaptation. The video adaptation enhances the suspenseful mood of the original version of The Monkey's Paw. Then he brings out the gift that he has brought back for them. “There he is” said Herbert white as the gate banged loudly and heavy footsteps came towards the door.” Herbert and Mr. White were playing chess while they were waiting for their friend and when their friend arrived they went to the door and welcomed him in and sergeant-major talked about his travels and his gift he had for them.

In the story “The Monkeys Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, he uses story elements such as foreshadowing, conflict, and surprise ending. Foreshadowing is one of the biggest ways that expresses suspense in the story. For example Sergeant Major Morris states that the first owner of the paw wished for death.
In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” the theme is don’t mess with fate and this story elements like character, setting, and plot all help contribute to the theme. The character’s emotions, reaction, and actions are a significant role in revealing the theme. The setting, though not realized as much actually shapes the story too. This is so creepy to me (in my opinion) as it tells the readers that something is going to happen and the readers get suspicious on whether the landlady is a nice old woman or a psychopathic serial killer.
Foreshadowing means to hint towards the future, almost telling what is going to happen in the story. A great use of foreshadowing was in the story “the monkey’s paw”, a quote that was a great use of foreshadowing is “Mr. White, who, having seen a fatal mistake after it was too late”(Jacobs, 50). When Mr. White has noticed that he made a mistake but he was too late to notice it before it was too late. In the story, Mr. White made a wish, but due to not being specific enough in his wish after learning what would happen in the first wish, he wished for his son back but he didn't come back normally. He came back as the way he died, his body still ruined and mangled by the machine that killed him, almost zombie like.
