Did you know that for stealing a purse you could have your limbs torn off?During the Elizabethan period, there would be crimes committed followed by punishments. These crimes are most not like the crimes today. Some include stole purses, begging, and poaching.Now you're probably wondering, what such crimes must those be? Money wasn't much easy to get back then so people tried to steal and be able to feed their families. There was no police to stop these thieves. They had the watch which was armed citizens. Major crimes included high, treason ,spying, murder, witchcraft etc.
Acts of the poor were most of the crimes.
Hangmen and executioners did a lot of the the more serious crimes as you can probably tell by there names.There were no police in the era.They had the watch which were armed citizens under control of the sheriff. The most common crimes were, theft, cut purses, begging and poaching. Theft was a very bad crime in those times, they would have great punishment if found guilty. Tortures would follow for crimes when committed. They would have certain classes. Upper and common class. This made things very different for each class. The richer people did not receive worse punishments because they had money to not be tortured. Certain punishments were followed out for different crime.

Most took it with great deal, but some didn't mind because there were very rich. The thieves normally were not wealthy and were jealous of more fortunate ones. They wanted money but wouldn't work for ir. This is why Queen Elizabeth would have punished them.
