The main character in the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, endured numerous troublesome trials. The last trial he endured, in my opinion, was the hardest; giving him the chance to attack and kill Zaroff right then and there, instead choosing not to take advantage of the situation. Ultimately, he confronted and challenged him to a fair and even sword fight, the winner getting to keep Zaroff 's home while the loser was fed to the dogs. This act shows a great deal of Rainsford 's character and personality, proving to be a man of honor and fairness, with respect in this scenario. Rainsford allowed an even fight to take place, and as a result, for his actions, he won while Zaroff received what he truly deserved.
This shows he is alert by how he realizes the hounds, Zaroff, and Ivan were all coming so he quickly set up a trap to try and kill them to escape. Also it shows that he can remember a trick he learned before and again apply it to his situation. And finally it shows that he is extremely alert by how he sets the trap up so quickly so he does not get captured by Zaroff. In conclusion all these examples show Rainsford is a survivor by how he shows alertness in dangerous situations and how he gets out of that
When an unfortunate accident throws Rainsford overboard, he stays calm (Connell 28). In this sudden event, he needs to stay calm, and he does that very well. From this point, he immediately looks around and surveys to find a place to go that isn’t stranded in the ocean. “General, I wish to leave this island at once” (Connell 36). Hearing all about the island and General Zaroff makes Rainsford decide he needs to leave.
Rainsford, in this situation, displayed a smile to show he wasn't the enemy nor was he fearful. Rainsford from the story “The Most Dangerous Game” used his skills to survive being hunter by General Zaroff. Throughout these three stories, three survival traits are used to live through harsh conditions. Resourcefulness, determination, and willpower are the traits one must have to be a survivor. Resourcefulness is the survival trait used by Rainsford in “The Most Dangerous Game.” On page 20 of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford constructs a Malay man-catcher trap as an attempt to kill General Zaroff.

Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General.
He had to fight himself to stay on track. He was so scared in the jungle while the General was trying to hunt him. On page 186, it says “He could not say where he was. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.
There are several conflicts in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell; while person versus person is the most obvious, person versus self and person versus nature are also present. For example, the “jagged crags” upon which Rainsford lands scratch his hands until they are raw, and when Rainsford is trying to survive the hunt, nature once again acts as an obstacle. The muck is like “ a giant leech” and the insects “[bite] him savagely” through the dense vegetation. On the other hand, Rainsford faces an internal dilemma when he is talking to Zaroff about hunting humans for sport: while Rainsford is shocked by the proposition, he feels no revulsion, no disgust. Therefore, because Rainsford does not seem to have an internal aversion to Zaroff’s proposal, that causes a quandary - his lack of moral dilemma in this situation is a dilemma in itself.
When he first fell off of his yacht and into the water, he wanted to thrash about like an animal and swim crazily back to shore for help, but instead he started swimming “with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength. He began to count his strokes; he could do possibly a hundred more…” (218). So in that moment, Rainsford was able to reason with himself and control his urge to thrash about the water. Instead, he moved with agility.

In “The most dangerous game” written by, Richard Connell, he uses many devices such as: characterization, plot structure and theme to contribute to the overall meaning of the story. Characterization is a big part of the overall meaning of the story which is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to their environment. The protagonist Rainsford is at a constant battle with the antagonist General Zaroff. Throughout the entire short story they both have similar minds sets and then farther along the main character 's mind set develops into something more. The reader can almost sense a self centeredness, and that he believes that there are only two type of people in this world, “the hunters and the huntees”, and he believes that he is the hunter.
