In “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell. Rainsford was a hunter that fell off a yacht in the Caribbean sea, and swam to an island named Ship-trap, Sanger Rainsford had to figure out how to outsmart Zaroff. The Author states three topics from the hunt starting by climbing up a tree, then seating a trap and hurting Zaroff, Lastly jumping off the cliff and swimming to General Zaroff’s home. Rainsford demonstrated how he is a quick thinker written several times throughout the story.
The short story “The Most Dangerous Game’’, Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff . Rainsford is a hunter who fell off a yacht at Ship Trap Island where he meets General Zaroff. General Zaroff is a hunter too. He stays on the island and hunts. Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting to their death because General Zaroff wants to hunt Rainsford.
The short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell has two main characters that exhibit distinct traits throughout the story. The protagonist, Rainsford, expresses aloofness, fearlessness, and experience. The story’s ironic plot twist has a small effect on Rainsford’s ways. During the rising action Rainsford experiences becoming the prey and shows fearlessness. He uses his experience to survive being the prey, but continues to express aloofness.
As the historical fictional work of Julia Alvarez in In the Time of The Butterflies goes on, Alvarez is actually the interview woman, telling the story through the interviewer’s eyes. In the beginning, Papa predicts Dede’s future and not any of her sisters’ futures which inform readers that not only are all the sisters’ special but that Dede has her part to continue the legacy of her sisters. After living under the control of Trujillo, an evil and corrupt president, the sisters risked their own lives by starting rebellions and joining movements secretly against Trujillo. Dede, who didn’t join the rebellion, watched helplessly as her family fell apart: First, with the death of Papa, and later on the deaths of her sisters who were arrested. These sisters were nicknamed Mariposa which means butterflies to show how fearless they were to stand up for their beliefs.
Rainsford is Alert. He demonstrated this in the beginning of the game when he first went into the forest, he tried to put as much distance between himself and the general as possible so it would be harder for Zaroff to find and kill him. “His first whole idea was to put as much distance between himself and General Zaroff (p.26)” Secondly Rainsford is intelligent because he had made various footprints going in multiple different directions,
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford fits the category of Zaroff’s ideal animal to hunt, because Rainsford displays the attribute to reason by being able to make many life saving decisions throughout the story. Rainsford has the ability to reason from the very beginning of the story, because he was able to remain calm to make a life saving decision in an unnerving situation, which proves that he fits the quarry for Zaroff to hunt. As he was in the water, he recalls the gunshots he heard while he was still on the yacht, “they had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength” (Connell 14). Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General.
In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, Rainsford is shown going through the struggles in the game that General Zaroff made. Through a psychoanalytic lens, we can see how the story closely relates to Connell’s experiences in World War I. (Ariffin, 5) Connell was born on October 17, 1893, in New York. Little is known about his childhood, except that he had chosen to follow his father’s footsteps into newspaper editing by the time he was 10 years old. Connell was drafted into World War I when he was 23 years old where he edited the camp newspaper and served in France for a year.
“The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, is a story about Sanger Rainsford, a big game hunter, on his way to the Amazon who accidentally falls overboard of the side of the yacht and ends up on Ship-Trap Island. He soon finds a house belonging to General Zaroff and his servant Ivan. Rainsford learns that Zaroff is hunting humans. Zaroff tries to convince Sanger to hunt with him, but he declines in outrage. The General is furious and decides to make Rainsford play the game.
Richard Connell reveals several different attributes about his characters, Rainsford and Zaroff, in The Most Dangerous Game. Connell does this by using a literary technique called characterization which is how the author of a written work reveals character traits of the different characters in their story to their readers. Unfortunately, characterization is not that simple. For some reason, intelligent literary figures decided to divide characterization into direct and indirect characterization. Not only does Connell use characterization in his short story, The Most Dangerous Game, but he uses both kinds of characterization for two different characters.
These reasons are why I believe that Rainsford’s ability to reason is a very important and helpful characteristic and it played a very important role in his survival on Ship Trap
“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a story about a man, Sanger Rainsford, whose ideals and overall character change throughout the story, specifically about hunting, due to his encounter with General Zaroff. At the beginning of the story Rainsford is a stuck up man. He could not care less about any other living things other than humans. He believes all living wildlife are expendable and only there for his pleasure of hunting. During the story Rainsford has to make many quick and overall difficult decisions during his encounters with the ocean, General Zaroff, and the island wilderness to survive, that change how he thinks about animals.
There are several conflicts in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell; while person versus person is the most obvious, person versus self and person versus nature are also present. For example, the “jagged crags” upon which Rainsford lands scratch his hands until they are raw, and when Rainsford is trying to survive the hunt, nature once again acts as an obstacle. The muck is like “ a giant leech” and the insects “[bite] him savagely” through the dense vegetation. On the other hand, Rainsford faces an internal dilemma when he is talking to Zaroff about hunting humans for sport: while Rainsford is shocked by the proposition, he feels no revulsion, no disgust. Therefore, because Rainsford does not seem to have an internal aversion to Zaroff’s proposal, that causes a quandary - his lack of moral dilemma in this situation is a dilemma in itself.
