Empathy is understanding one’s feelings and problems. The word empathy is utilized to share what they feel. Empathy gives us a way to understand people and the ability to relate to the person. It is a vital factor that can thus create a new connection. The word empathy has a deep meaning and uses the topic of understanding to connect to one another. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the characters Lennie and George show that empathy is an important trait for people to have.
Slim is the most empathetic character in Of Mice and Men. In the novel, Slim is represented as the leader and prospers a role as someone who is understanding and taken back as a leader. One example of Slim’s empathy is when he saw the fear in George’s mood and empathized with his feelings by leading him to get distracted and making him feel better. Another time, Slim demonstrated empathy was when he suggested ways they could penalize Lennie, and recognized George’s work of how he had to overlook Lennie for a long time. "You hadda, George. I swear you had-da. Come on with Me” (page 107).

Carlson is taken as a careless man who ignores others' feelings. He shows a reckless attitude, rude, and is controlling. One example of Carlson’s lack of empathy is when he killed Candy’s dog with no remorse or empathy. Another time Carlson showed little empathy was when he didn’t recognize George’s feelings about killing his best friend. It resembles his lack of understanding of others’ feelings and how he dismisses the effects. "Look, Candy. This ol' dog jus' suffers hisself all the time.
