In Alice Munro’s “Red Dress”, the mother's control over the narrator represents how society standards control her. In the beginning of the short story, the narrator reveals to the readers she has a winter dance for her school coming up soon, and her mother is making her a dress. When at home, while her mother is measuring her for the dress, the narrator declares: “My mother pulled me about, and pricked me with pins.
