In the article The Sanctuary of School written by Lynda Barry, she talks about how her home life was a mess; and how she felt her only safe place was her elementary school. She mentions how her house was hectic with people moving in and out of it. Along with her parents fighting all day and night. She says that she and her brother were easily forgotten, and slipping out of the house was never noticed. Proven by past experiences such as bullying; kids may not think that their school is a safe place.
The biggest fear that many students around the world attempt to avoid is to be physically and emotionally damaged. The goal is to blend in with well-respected classmates and to fit in with others. Although, to those who do not achieve this goal, they are usually targeted by an immature bully. However, an average bully is able to create a more fierce bully within an innocent victim. Perhaps a monster is enraged and caged inside of everyone.
A sensitive society has its difficulties for people to even speak out against the issue of bullying, without being interpreted a different way than its original meaning. Bullying and harassment have been a noticeable problem among students in schools worldwide, and still social acceptance and acknowledgment is a continuous issue. These groups of students are visible in mostly every middle school in any location. Many of the cliques people hear problems about are the female cliques.
Most high school students are subject to an everyday routine consisting of having classes all day, having to talk to teachers and go to extracurricular activities just to go home to study and sleep. If you have ever watched high school musical growing up you may have thought about what high school was really going to be like when you get there. Kids wonder if it will be similar to the movie or if it will be completely different than they thought. High school and high school musical have their similarities originating from everyday life when in reality they differ in the reality of students, teachers, classes, sports and musicals. High school students are everyday typical teenagers, their attention is stuck on their phone, and friends for the most part.
I hope that the assumption that the middle schools of Blount County are under-performing is not being made based solely on a comparison with the high schools ' performance and the elementary school 's performance. That would be an unfair and inaccurate assumption if that were the case. The loss of achievement associated with school-to-school transitions from elementary school to middle school and middle school to high school is a well documented occurrence. Studies (Alspaugh,1998 & Rosenblatt, 2008) have found a statistically significant achievement loss associated with the transition from elementary school to middle school at the 6th grade as compared with K-8 schools that did not have a school-to-school transition at 6th grade.
When I was in MacCracken middle school, I always wondered what it would be like when I went to Spartanburg high. I kind of wished someone would have told me what high school would be like. Now that I have been here for a year and a half, it is not that hard. I have managed to learn not only a lot in class but also a lot about Spartanburg High School and its people. Friendships and reasonability are areas that I think students in the eighth- grade student should know before they arrive.
High school is one thing that a vast majority of people have experienced. Several of those who are acquainted with the high school experience are well aware of how terrible it can be; it is "the mouth of a great demon biting and chewing and smushing people in the face" (Jesse Andrews) leaving us in ruins after we graduate. It is a place to put awkward teenagers that adults do not want to deal with. It is a place where individuality and dissent are encouraged, but also crushed. High school is simply irrelevant and overwhelming and it must be reevaluated.
Jay Asher’s book, Thirteen Reasons Why is based around the suicide of Hannah Baker. When Hannah Baker committed suicide, she left behind tapes giving thirteen reasons why she killed herself. Those reasons were thirteen people who had made a harmful impact on her life. The tapes were left for those people to listen to and pass to the next person. In this book, Jay Asher showed that overlooking details about people cause bad consequences for many people.
The past four years of my life hold both my highest of highs and my lowest of lows. High school can be a very awkward time period in a person’s life. Four years ago, I made the intimidating switch from St. Mary’s School to Algoma High School. There were certain aspects of high school which made me nervous, but academics was not one of them. I learned how to be a responsible student in my earlier years, and school had always come relatively easy to me.
My high school experience was a long, frustrating learning experience. I didn’t know what to expect, or what I was getting myself into. Nobody gave me the tools to understand the main focus of each year. I am going to give you tips and advice on how to succeed in high school. I will discuss 9-12th grade along with what to expect each year.
How do you survive Jr. High? A lot of kids are scared of entering junior high, but it’s not very difficult. Junior High is all about learning to how balance different aspects of your life. Junior High helps to prepare you for high school and college. It teaches you how to properly balance your social life, person responsibilities, and academic responsibilities.
Schools with effective approaches educate their students on bullying, and create strict guidelines to follow with serious consequences if not followed. Granada Hills Charter High School has a strong anti-bullying policy, where students are required to adhere to a series of rules which strictly enforce bullying. Should a bully be present, the school enforces strict “disciplinary action if the bullying action negatively affects the school environment, the victim’s attendance, the victim’s feelings about him- or herself, and/or the learning experience” (Granada Hills Charter High School). If a student were to experience these effects, then the bully would be held to specific consequences such as counseling, detention, a parent-student dean conference, referral to school police with possible arrest, suspension, or recommendation for expulsion. The University of North Carolina conducted a systematic review of different anti-bullying policies, and concluded that “anti-bullying policies might be effective at reducing bullying if their content is based on evidence and sound theory and if they are implemented with a high level of fidelity” (Hall).
The numbers of bullied children are increasing as well as the victims, bullying don’t only affect the victims, but the bully’s and every one surrounding them (DecemberStone, n.d.). Bullying can affect the children personality, cases problems in the society, and it also gives a bad idea for the outsiders about our culture. Anyhow, it got to stop.
