At first, Fish was not a suspect in the disappearance of Grace, in fact, a different man was arrested and put into custody because he was the main suspect. Charles Edward Pope had spent 108 days in jail before they found him not guilty. Fish had been successful in his last known attempt to kidnap and eat a child. The murder of Grace Budd happened in 1928. It was not until 1934 that an anonymous letter arrived at the Budd home. Since Mrs. Budd was unable to read the letter, her son, Edward, read the letter aloud to her.
The letter contained the horrifying details of how their daughter was kidnapped, killed, and eaten. With the dates given above, it is shown that it took six years for the Budd family to receive this letter. It took even longer for them to catch Fish given that the letter arrived anonymously. Fish had failed to remember one thing when sending this letter, the shaped emblem in the corner. The emblem read N.Y.P.C.B.A. This stood for the New York Private Chauffeur’s Benevolent Association. In a failed attempt, Fish was caught and arrested for the kidnapping and murder of Grace. Never denying the murder of Grace, he did deny and admit to other sickening things. He denied ever raping her, although he admitted to having several strong orgasms while strangling the helpless young child (Museum). Fish’s trial lasted eleven days. In the end, he was found guilty and sentenced to death by electrocution, the same execution that Ted Bundy received. As it turns out, he was on death row at the same time as Bundy. In an attempt to escape his fully expected guilty charge, Fish had tried to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.
