Katherine Anne Porter had once said, “The past is never where you think you left it.” Therefore, events in the past might haunt you in the future. This theme is shown in the song “Dollar and a Dream III” by J. Cole and the short story “The Moustache” by Robert Cormier. Through both texts there is a similar theme, as well as a similar analysis strategy. The common analysis strategy through the texts is conflicts with themselves or with others. J. Cole emphasises this theme by summoning memories of a conflict he had with himself in the past and how he had a dream, but not enough money. On the other side, Robert Cormier emphasizes the theme through Mike 's grandmothers conflict with her husband, she regrets a conflict she started with her dead husband. In essence, the theme was shown through personal conflict in J. Cole’s song and relationships and conflicts through the short story.
The prevalent theme that appears in both texts is events in past might haunt you in the future. During the middle of the story “The Moustache,” Mike’s grandmother gets confused with who Mike is and thinks he is her dead husband. In “Dollar and a Dream III,” J. Cole is poor but has a dream. The song symbolizes a dark time in his past that scarred him, “Scattered thoughts, dark secrets lead me to a blacker heart.” In J. Cole 's past he had a conflict with himself and knew about dark secrets that have figuratively lead him to a blacker heart. In essence it means this has scarred him as a person and this time of his life scars him. He was in conflict with himself and was at an all time low due to the conflict, “Life at the bottom.” In J. Cole 's past he had a conflict with himself, and was experiencing an all time low. He remembers this past and it reminds him of bad times. This shows he had a conflict with himself and his own
