Stereotypes are a very significant problem in our society causing people to judge, label and generalize individuals according on a single example or story. Generalizing is an erroneous assumption based on a person sex, race, religion, clothing preference, and other factors. As explained in the book “One World Many Cultures”, the essays “The Myth of Latin woman” by Judith Cofer and “A Look Behind The Veil “by Elizabeth w. And Robert A. Fernea, emphasizes how society perceives women. These texts along with the article “Veil of Ignorance” by Leila Ahmed share a common issue which is misjudging women based on their clothing style . As a result of this misreadings women are being sexualized ,oppressed or viewed as immoral. Judith Ortiz Cofer talks about how women are misjudged as sexually and morally liberal based on the way they dress. Elisabeth W. Fernea talks about this perceptions “Many objects signify values in society and become charged with meaning, a meaning that may be different for members of the society and for observers of that society (Fernea 266)”. We all have different mindsets and perspectives , women choose different clothing styles for many reason such as , comfort, creativity, identity, protection, religion and other purposes. Another example is Leila Ahmed and her decision to unveil because to her the veil signified oppression and inequality. However other females from her circle felt very different about the
