Stop “Defending” Music is a great article about music and how music is viewed within our educational system. The article is written by Peter Greene and he goes into detail about his opinion on why we should stop “defending” music. I believe that by the author saying, “Stop ‘Defending Music’”, he means stop saying that music is needed just for students to succeed in other subjects in school. In the first paragraph Greene says, “…defending music as a great tool for raising test scores and making students smarter” (Stop “Defending” Music). Throughout the entire article, he expresses his opinion on why we shouldn’t defend music for reasons that are in the quote above, but for the music itself.

1940’s Music The second world war was a turbulous time for the united states with lots of men being drafted away to the war in Europe. At home things were changing drastically with all the men away women began to take over jobs like manufacturing and office jobs alike. Hardships during this time included Rations that were imposed by the government and life at home became hard with that and the thought of a wife losing her husband plagued the minds of those at home. with world war II going on a lot of the musicians were drafted into the army to fight against the Nazis’, So music for a while was at a standstill in america.
One of the themes is about the reality of our memories. We have sad and happy moments in our lives. When it is a happy moment, we try to cherish and remember it; whereas, when it 's a sad or upsetting moment, we try to forget and move on. When we say that we had forgotten the memory, it is possible that we are avoiding it. We should accept it and improve ourselves from that memory, and that is when we truly move on from the sadness.
