Existentialism is a philosophy that many people of various faiths would agree with, if not for the fact that if someone believes in existentialism, they do not believe in a perfect, divine being that has a plan for everyone, in unity of humans as brothers and sisters, and that there is a life after this one. When this is overlooked, existentialism tells people to find meaning in their lives, as this is the only one they have. After this one, there is nothing. This is a scary thought to people, as everyone has or will say to themselves, “What have I done with my life?” At this point, many people would pray to their gods, but someone who believes in existentialism believes that there is no divine form who knows all and plans people’s lives. In this tale, Sisyphus is a mortal who tricks the Gods and causes havoc for them, so they sentenced him to the eternal punishment of pushing a massive boulder up a hill, but whenever he gets to the top, the boulder always falls back down the hill. The Greek Gods condemned Sisyphus to an eternity of doing nothing. This seemed contradictory to existentialism, as if the purpose of life is to find meaning, how is a man doomed to eternal nothingness an example of it? It is a perfect example because Sisyphus is an absurd hero, as he is able to find meaning in nothing. When Lucky and Pozzo, the strangers they know quite well, fall down and need help getting up, Didi and Gogo debate for a long time what they should do, but eventually decide on helping them up. They find meaning in their situation, as helping someone who has asked for is has meaning. Another example of finding meaning in one’s situation is keeping one’s promises. This can be seen when Didi and Gogo wait on Godot, even though he never shows up. However, they still have hope he will show and they made a promise which they find meaning in by keeping their promise. This can also be seen when Lucky obeys Pozzo, even though he has the ability to just walk away. He does what Pozzo says because he made a promise to be a servant.
