Anacostia is a historic neighborhood in Washington DC, located east of the Anacostia River. First appearing on the oldest map of Capitan John Smith, Anacostia was once home to a Native American tribe called Nacotchtank. These natives often referred to themselves as Anaquashtanks, which means trading village in their native language, Algonquian. Anacostia once served as a prime located as a trading port for natives and settlers in the 1600’s. However, Anacostia’s significance faded away, it is no longer know for its trading ports but for its high crime and poverty rates in the District.
Body Ritual among the Nacirema was written by Horace Miner in 1956. This piece was crafted as an excellent accumulation of the techniques of ironic, symbolism and use of a didactic tone that made this piece a great success. An example of where irony is used in the text is the way he makes us see the tribe as foreign and exotic and we judge it, but then we realize that Nacirema is American spelled backwards and the reader see that it is not a foreign tribe - but indeed the modern American people themselves. There is also mass irony around Notgnihsaw and the chopping down of the cherry tree in which the Spirit of Truth resided, because Notgnihsaw spelled backwards is Washington. The characters in ‘Burial Rites’ by Hannah Kent do not feel powerless - regardless of their social position. Shown by the way that the Jonnsons act in front of Bjorn Blöndal and other higher-class guests, they value their social position highly, believing that the higher the position, the more power they will have. Consequently, social position can make one feel impotent. Another reason that social power is not unimportant is the idea that Bjorn Blöndal feels as though he is akin to God in his social position, therefore he feels all powerful by virtue of his social position, in juxtaposition to the characters with a low social position who feel powerless. A little bit of perspective on the society and culture of the Nacirema people involve body rituals and how they go through great lengths to ensure physical wellness. It is difficult as a reader to make sense of the rituals the Nacirema performed and why they did. The Nacirema people believe that the human body is ugly and that it is susceptible to disease. They live a very bizarre lifestyle, not the stressing on the physical well-being part but the spiritual sense they put into their beliefs.

In the study called Body Ritual Among the Nacirema, the author calls the rituals and ceremonies the people perform “excessive”. They are insane rituals that people in America wouldn’t seem to think about doing. They sound so different, and unusual. As one reads the fieldwork, it raises a lot of questions and concerns. To anyone from another country it would seem these rituals are excessive because of the way they are performed, and the things they use to perform them.
These differ in every culture and some may even appear brutal or abusive to many outsiders, an example would be a Maasai warrior must kill a lion single handedly, tattoos and mutilation after a certain milestone in age. The ones that are more familiar to all would include the courtship, wedding or funeral. According to our text, “ceremonies such as christening, puberty rituals, marriage and funerals, which we hold whenever a member of society undergoes an important change status, within the lifecycle of the group, are considered rites of passage.” (Crapo, 2013 para. 2) Rites of passage are an important part of tradition that often symbolizes a transition from childhood to teenager to adulthood and they even give off a sense of manhood to their family as well as their community.
Across the world, traditions are carried throughout many communities, and when others try to change these said traditions, there is typically backfire and disagreement. In the short story “Dead Man’s Path” by Chinua Achebe, the same background is used to fuel the story’s plot.
