1. Many of the neutralized immigrants were Irish and supported the ideals of Jacksonian Democrats. The Jacksonian Democratic Party welcomed and reached out to these new potential voters. It paid off and in 1855, 34 percent of New York City voters were first-generation Irish immigrants. The Jacksonian Democratic Party gained more voters and popularity and therefore influencing the American political system.
Disuniting of America by Arthur Schlesinger argues in favor of enforcing western ideals like democracy, capitalism, and monotheism onto our students. Schlesinger believes that if we veer off the path, the United States will face ethnic tension present in Eastern Europe and Africa. Under this belief, the United States is heading towards chaos. Every year more people migrate to America and minorities are becoming majorities. For this country to succeed, Arthur Schlesinger believes that country needs to follow tradition and be similar to the rest of those in the United States.
Reading Response 4: “Introduction: The Fabrication of Race” by Matthew Frye Jacobson Manvir Kaur July 10, 2017 History 17A: U.S History The term “race” is one of the major aspects of one’s identity which tends to completely change over time. The primary source, “Introduction: The Fabrication of Race,” is part of a book called “Whiteness of a Different Color: European Immigrants and the Alchemy of Race” which was written by Matthew Frye Jacobson in the twentieth century. In this source, he expands on the topic of “whiteness” with its relation to European immigrants in the United States and also, on the different perspectives of how other races are seen.
Response to “Our Fear of Immigrants” In “Our Fear of Immigrants” Jeremy Adam Smith takes a neutral stance on the immigration and anti-immigration argument. Smith begins by telling the story of a 4th grade class at Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, California who try to fight back against immigration laws after a classmate of theirs was deported back to his home country. Smith then goes on to compare the 4th graders to the adults of their town who fight for stronger immigration laws asking his readers what qualities the children possess that the rest of the citizens do not to make them react so differently.
Though a Christian nation, American’s practices and believes are not consistent to Bible’s laws and commandment. Douglass argues that “the existence of slavery in this country brands republicanism as a sham, humanity as a base pretence, and Christianity as lie” (35), meaning that America is a nation of “inconsistencies.” Though they call themselves Christians, their religion is nothing but a lie as they do not follow God’s commandment of piety, they are full of pride, insolence and vices. He further argues that the “national inconsistencies… saps the foundation of religion” since it “shelters crimes” (35) against humanity. However, he does do that to ridicule Americans, rather he does it to emphasize the inconsistence amongst American believes and practices.
The American person has no true ideals, or beliefs that make him or her up. Americans are free to believe in what they want, think what they want, preach what they want, and most importantly say what they want . Authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman show in their texts such as “Self-Reliance” , The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass , and “I Celebrate Myself” that there is no true definition of the American identity. The American identity can be seen in the many aspects of peoples lives, and a a quality that many Americans portray is the ability to have individual thoughts and emotions as well as the capability to not conform to society because they stand up for their own individual rights. The modern stigma against illegal immigrants has been caused by the media focusing on crimes caused by illegal immigrants and not how illegal immigrants have been successful and helpful. Although the stigma may seem like a simple problem, it really is a complex problem with many roots and many reasons it is still alive today. The idea of an “American identity” is brought from the opportunities that are awaiting them in the “Promised Land”, as the foreigners would call America. Religious freedom, jobs, and freedom of speech lured the outlanders in.
When I immigrate to the United States I was unaware that other immigrants are having same symptoms that I had like anxiety and depression. According to a study of about 250 immigrant in New Zealand that self-reported their post immigration feelings suggest that they all suffered from depression. The study analyzed immigrant from different countries and suggested that “demographic characteristics are not associated with symptoms levels” (Pernice, 511). In other words regardless where an immigrant is coming from he or she most likely will have similar symptoms. The study also indicated that not having close friends and spending most of the time with one’s own ethnic group affected anxiety and depression scores.
Being an American is not determined by race, religion, gender, or age. Being an American is decided by how hard a person works to succeed in a goal, by helping others when they are in need of help, by always pushing forward even when odds are against them, and by giving to others that don’t have the luxuries some Americans do. Being an American also requires being brave, sacrificing for the greater good and mercy to those who ask for forgiveness. These are just a few of the many characteristics of being an American. What values evident in the assigned texts provide the basis of the character of an American.
The traumatic effects caused by immigration Did you know that 29% of foreign-born children and 34% foreign born parents experienced trauma during the immigration process? Thousands of people from all over the world leave their homes in search of a better life for themselves and their families. But, along the way they may experience traumatic events related to the immigration process which can have lasting effects. Separation or loss of a family member, leaving behind a well loved home and community, re-adjusting to new and different culture, food, customs and lifestyle are things many immigrants face, which add to the difficulty of being an immigrant. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder One traumatic effect that is often caused by immigration is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D).
In Economic and Social Impact of Immigrants Stephen Moore is arguing that immigrants and refugees contribute positively to the American Economy. He conveys this through the use of surveys, data, and facts from multiple sources. In the second paragraph he took a 1986 survey that concluded that a lot of foreigners achieved success in this country in difficult positions such as engineering and entrepreneurship. Two separate studies’ discussed in the sixth and seventh paragraphs dispel common beliefs that immigrants take jobs away from natural born citizens. Ever since the war in Syria and in many other countries, Lebanon has been overwhelmed with immigrants. The life on the streets has changed and our culture is being eaten up slowly disintegrating under a dark veil which is immigration. However, my father took this scenario to his advantage and started hiring immigrants for his factory which helped us a lot since we pay immigrants half as much as we used to pay local labor and we started noticing an increase in our profits. Many other countries have noticed the opportunity that is an outcome of immigration and started seizing this opportunity for their wellbeing. However, we are surrounded and engulfed by immigrants flooding our streets emerging from their homeland and into our own.
