Manifest destiny was one of the most significant concepts in U.S. history. It was the belief that the U.S.’s national birth was the start of new history and that it was destined by God for everyone to follow American culture and expand their land from “Sea to shining sea.” They wanted to carry on this idea into a reality until they grew to their full potential as a nation. They wanted to spread to and gain all the land they possibly could, and take control of everything. Although there were many positives like gaining more land and resources, the negatives outweigh the positives drastically. Manifest destiny was arguably one of the most destructive things in history towards some of the Native American’s tribes especially the Cherokee. It also had a very heavy and negative impact on Slavery during 1803 to 1860. Lastly, I believe the Mexicans/Tejanos were slowly being robbed of their land by the Texans. I believe that Manifest Destiny, although it was important and had positive effects, there are still many reasons to be against it. Manifest Destiny greatly impacted the Native American’s lives in 1830. This was because Andrew Jackson signed The Indian Removal Act into law on May 28th, 1830. This was unfair to the Tejanos because they let the Texans in their land to farm and the Texans agreed in the beginning to adapt to the Tejanos customs but later started to want more independence and use their own culture’s language and customs. This caused lots of war and conflict like the Texan Independence War against Mexico. The Texans and Tejanos were in great turmoil during this period of time from 1835 to 1836. Eventually the Texans won and Texas was annexed into the United States after a vote which overall took away the Tejanos’ original
