Fighting in World War I was one of the most brutal wars ever known. This was because of the new technology advancements during this time. The way wars were fought changed significantly. In my opinion, the variety of changes have a negative influence. The negative influences continue to impact our world to this day. New technology negatively influenced warfare during the 20th century causing more casualties, the war to last extensively longer, and civilians have more usage of powerful weapons.
Firstly, for battles and wars before World War I, soldiers mostly used weapons such as rifles and handguns. These guns took a too much time to reload and they were not accurate when trying to kill. One of the first technology advancements was the invention of machine guns. The machine gun made it especially easy for defenders to kill large numbers of attacking soldiers. As long as the defenders were protected, the machine guns could rapidly slaughter countless advancing soldiers at once. Sometimes tanks were used that had machine guns mounted to them.This drastically increased the amount of casualties in every war which was an extreme negative influence. Trench warfare is when a large hole is dug into the ground to be protected from the opposing forces. This sacrifices the mobility of the soldiers in order to gain protection. Sense there was no mobility the fighting would not move forward. The most famous use of trench warfare was the stalemate on the Western front in World War I. A stalemate is a deadlock when neither side is able to defeat each other. This stalemate happened because both sides, the Germans and Allies, were protecting themselves in trenches, making no progress.
