The portrayal of women in the media has evolved from a negative to a positive view. In the past, women were limited in the roles they could play in film, advertising, and television. Statistically, females are underrepresented and continue face gender stereotypes. Some women have had unfair treatment. Many roles by women started out as mainly basic traditional roles and have progressed into more prominent and educated roles as society changes. Although men in the industry outnumber women this progression is a welcomed change. Women have been recognized but not as much as they do now.

As you can see over time the portrayal of women as a whole in these areas (film, advertising, and television) has increased. There has been an increase of roles for women. Now many women are portrayed as hardworking women, independent women, and determined women. One famous quote by Meghan Echikunwoke says “I definitely am drawn to strong females who are successful, smart women because I am a woman like that .I think it’s important to portray those kinds of women on film and television. Especially as a black woman I think it’s important.” Women have been portrayed as many different things like a superwoman, homemaker, secretary, and an office worker who only works to find love. In the future I see women being the main vision in television, film, and advertising. I would love for women to improve so that they are portrayed better than they were. There’s still need for improvement in many areas of portrayal of women, but in my project I focused on 3 main areas film, television, and advertising.
