“He is African American, so I bet he is an athlete!” “Latinos are criminals! All Asians are Chinese!” “We live in a society where cultural diversity is not accepted.” The United States society makes other cultures feel inferior with the only fact that they are different. By living in the United States you see many stereotypes play a role in gender and race. Most of the stereotypes are seen and created in media outlets. White Americans, grow up feeling superior without giving themselves the opportunity of getting to know how people from other cultures really are. When it comes to movies and T.V. show Latinos, Asians, and African American are discriminated and recognized with many negative stereotypes. The article Images of Latinos in the U.S. Media stated, “...Latinos have been found to represent .6% to 6.5% of all characters, 1% of all television families, and analyzes of television advertising have found Latinos to appear in only 1% to 4.5% of commercials” (Rivadeneyra, Ward, & Gordon, 2007). Most Latinos actors take the role of lazy, less intelligent, aggressive, and men with poor work ethic. Latinas are known as exotic, aggressive, lazy and untrustworthy in the media. The stereotypes of Latinos are incorrect because we are not lazy at all. Considering that they work for long hours in the fields, construction, and many other hard jobs. In contrast, Asians are seen as nerds, waitress, servants and kung fu masters. As well as Latinos, Asians are hardworking and intelligent. The article “Even Black 5-Year- Olds Are Not Safe From Racial Bias” stated, “Although such incidents have multiple causes, one potential contributor is that young Black males are stereotypically associated with violence and criminality" (Edwards). For most of the Latinos culture “machismo” is portrayed in a negative perception. In “machismo” men are seen as the rough, ungenerous, violent, manly, strong, etc. Men have to be manly and take the last decisions even over the women. For instance, a man could have various women and be a person to admire. In contrast when a women has more than one men they are seen as a person who sells themselves.
