In 1848 is an important time in American history. 1848 marks the beginning of the Civil War, the route of the transcontinental railroad, the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and the great flood, (History, 2017). United States was already working towards taking the railroad west, taking people and goods across the states. It was spurred by the discovery of gold in California and war. The railroads were a significant part of both the Civil War and the Mexican-American War. While the Mexican-American War was ending, the Civil War was beginning. The train routes and railways were used to transport material and weapons for battle as the railroad continued to grow. This can be seen when Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act, (History, 2017). Because African Americans were associated as primitive people, it suggest that Black people are uncivilized, uncultured, and without modern faculties or intelligence. This stigma was labeled and placed on Black people building walls of isolation and bias from their White counterparts. They were considered this because they are seen as outsiders from the land. African did not come willingly however by force from foreign lands with different traditions and customs. Black culture was often ignored by many Americans, making Europeans naive to understanding Black people and their way of life. This created barriers between Blacks and the rest of society, thus being labeled as modern primitive. Although they lived in the modern world with access to information and technology, their differences made them stand out and be labeled as primitive or outsiders.
