In a time of economic prosperity, a rise in the standard of living and rock and roll, also known as the “happy days”, the 1950s were a time looked back on with nostalgia. On the other hand, the 1950s were also met with many problems involving civil rights, the Cold War and McCarthyism. After the end of World War II, Americans came home to jobs available and a period of consensus. Consensus meaning there wasn’t much debate in politics. Punks style of music is considered uneducated, raw, and rough because of the vessel in which it is administered. Kids with giant, dyed mohawks, leather jackets with studs, and screaming into a microphone was not the typical way to get your message out to the masses. However, their message of tolerance, police brutality, and corporate scams have all hit the headlines over the last decade which brings into question, is punk music uneducated, or was it considered uneducated because of the way the bands portrayed themselves?
The 1990’s was arguably the greatest decade for the music scene. This decade encountered the rise of the best musical artists and bands of all time. The music from this time was highly thought of because most bands were bringing back the rock and roll sound everyone loved from the late 60’s and 70’s. The band that really brought this sound back for generations to come was Nirvana. The band Nirvana wasn 't just considered to be rock and roll, their music could fall under several off branches of rock and that 's what made them the best.
The creators of Woodstock could have never expected the number of people and were not prepared whatsoever. It was the peak of the 60s but shortly after it, the hippy movement collapsed. In accordance to the new hippy movement came heavy metal which like several other types of music, started in England. People were tired of the free spirited mindset and wanted to bring society back down to the dirty reality of what was happening in life.
Next, there is behavior. Punk was created by young people viewing of themselves as “bored working-class youths looking for entertainment, rather than viewing themselves as artists” (Bailey 17). There were changes in behaviors of society such as rebellion, race, drug use, and was seen as an expression of insubordination towards adults (Bailey 17).
As reviewed in class, many adult Americans used to think that Rock and Roll and it’s exponents were a “bad influence” to teenagers back on the days. It is important to point out that many social changes on that time were a result of sociocultural modifications around authority figures like the government, parents, school authorities, etc. With the influence of Rock and Roll, people started to question topics like: religion, politics, social structures and sexual statements and teens showed attitudes against any form of authority that tried to control them. After World War II, adolescents showed more violent attitudes against social statements at that time.
