Dana Garcia Ripley Honors English 2 20 March 2017 Lack of Justice The book The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot tells the story of an African American woman named Henrietta Lacks whose cells made one of the greatest medical contributions ever. Henrietta Lacks died of cervical cancer at the age of 31. Cells were taken from her body without her knowledge. Rebecca L. Skloot is a self-employed science writer who specializes in science and medicine.
Conscience. Innovation. Alleviations. These three words all coincide in the creation of medicine. One could say the world of medicine all-round has drastically changed over the past couple of decades, but does anyone know the original reasoning behind it all?
What makes us trust another human being? Even though there are many who are corrupt, trustworthy individuals have the ability to persuade us of their credibility. In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a nonfiction book, Rebecca Skloot tells us an almost unbelievable story in a very believable way. Rebecca Skloot shows extreme patience with Deborah. As she continues to conduct research on the Lacks family, it is not uncommon for Deborah to act extremely irrationally.
Many of the concepts we have learned this semester are used in “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. They are cells, mitosis, viruses, lab safety, and even the scientific method. The book is based on cells so there are many times when it talks about them. There is a time when a person sees a cell going through mitosis and meiosis. The cells in the book are taken from a woman with cancer.
Stewart’s position is that of a lifelong slave. Stewart would rather die than to live her whole life “shaking carpets” or “tending upon gentlemen’s tables”. Her key message is that African Americans should have the same, equal rights as Americans fight for. She wants her audience to fully understand the effects on a lifelong slave. She discusses how the service tears the body away and says “nature herself becomes almost exhausted.”
What is Unintentional Becomes Valuable The novel The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, written almost sixty years after the death of Henrietta Lacks, was produced by Rebecca Skloot who, while researching, personally interacted with the family and educated them on the topic. After Henrietta’s death, her family is left with a great amount of confusion and dissatisfaction. Not only can Deborah Lacks, daughter of Henrietta, and her siblings not comprehend what happens to Henrietta and her cells, but an underlying pit of anger and fear within them deepens from not knowing.
Chris McCandless and Henry David Thoreau are followers of the 19th century philosophy Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is the belief that everyone has the wisdom in them to be one with God without having to go through a priest or be in a church. Transcendentalists base this philosophy on self-wisdom, nature, and social reform. Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild shows Chris McCandless’ choices and parallels to Henry David Thoreau’s transcendental beliefs from Walden. One transcendental belief that Chris McCandless follows is living deliberately.
Rhetorical analysis is an investigation into how someone uses his/her critical reading skills to analyze text. The objective of the rhetorical analysis is the study of how the author writes, instead of what the author wrote. At that point, we need to examine the method that the author uses to attain his goal. According to Jonah G. Willihnganz “A rhetorical analysis is an examination of how a text persuades us of its point of view. It focuses on identifying and investigating the way a text communicates, what strategies it employs to connect to an audience, frame an issue, establish its stakes, make a particular claim, support it, and persuade the audience to accept the claim”.
This is shown when the characters in this novel speak out against a concept they know nothing about. Therefore, the literary terms an author uses can make an immense impact to the connections the reader makes to a novel, and help to shape a theme that is found throughout
The different perspectives allow for a multi perspective analysis of common themes that have been used and it is easy to make the connection on how the popular messages impact other authors.
What is meant here is the fact that the rhetorical analysis uncovers the extent to which the text is personal to the narrator because the text is a Journal, where the author conveys his personal experience, feelings and emotions. At the same time, the rhetorical analysis reveals the full extent to which the text is important to the narrator as a form of self-expression and the means to understand

The proper usage of words is imperative to convey the message to the audience. Using the help of literary devices or strategies assist a writer in the process of ensuring their meaning is interpreted the correct way. The wrong combination of words can effortlessly divert readers or listeners which could result in misinterpretation of the message behind the speech. .
According to Merriam-Webster, convergence is defined as, “the act of converging and especially moving toward union or uniformity,” and twain is another word for “two.” The title of the poem foreshadows what it is the author is going to talk about throughout the poem. In the poem “The Convergence of the Twain,” Thomas Hardy is describing the sinking of the once famous Titanic, and how it met its inevitably tragic end. He ambiguously focuses on describing the “meeting” of the ship and iceberg, and what the aftermath consisted of. Hardy uses poetic devices such as rhythm and hyperboles to describe the ship and all of its materialistic belongings, meeting its inevitable doom by crashing into the iceberg.
Darwin's theory of evolution is a widely held concept that all life is related through the descent of a common ancestor with modification. It presumes the development of life from non-life and how complex creatures evolve over time from more simplistic ancestors by a process called natural selection. From generation to generation, natural selection occurs from differences in survival, fertility, rate of development, mating success, heritable variations (i.e size, shape, behavior, color) among organisms or changes in traits that eventually confer an advantage in the competition for resources. As Darwin observed different species, he noticed how creatures that carry these variations and survive the “struggle for existence” pass on their heritable traits or traits that
