The book ¨The Outsiders¨, written by S. E. Hinton, is an action packed story set in the 1960s about a greaser, named Ponyboy, that lives on the West side of town, with his brothers Darrel “Darry” and Sodapop Curtis. The Socs, the rich kids that live on the East side of town, are disliked by the Greasers, and vice versa. The boy's parents passed away a couple years back in a car crash and Darry has been caring for his brothers since. In the book, Darry is described to be smart, strong, handsome, athletic, principled, very serious, often grumpy, and can get violently angry. He is 6’ 2”, broad shouldered, has dark brown hair, and cold blue-green eyes. Darry is hard and firm, as it says in the book. Sodapop is a sixteen year old high school dropout who spends most of his time working at the DX gas station. In the book, Soda occurs to be smart, athletic, remarkably handsome, slim, very kind, and immensely hard working. In the movie, Sodapop appears to be nice, handsome, respectful, playful, thin, rough, organized, fit, and loving. In the book, Soda is referred to as happy-go-lucky, because no matter what, he is usually happy. Sodapop is the middle brother and is a role model to Ponyboy. Soda has dark-gold hair, brown eyes, and appears to be shorter than Darry. In the book, Ponyboy is a scared, shy, brave, 14 year old boy that has greenish-gray eyes, and light brown long hair. In the movie, Pony has darker hair and seems tougher, nicer, and more comfortable. In the book as well as the movie, Pony’s best friend is Johnny Cade, they are both the youngest out of the gang. In the movie, Darry just shoves Pony, he doesn’t actually hit him. After Darry hits Pony, Johnny and Ponyboy decide to run away. Before they get the chance to get away, they run into the Socs. The Socs jump Ponyboy and Johnny but surprisingly, Johnny killed Bob Sheldon (The Soc) because he was drowning Ponyboy. Pony and Johnny both run away to a church on a hilltop. In the book as well as the movie, they both cut their hair off and Ponyboy bleaches his. In the movie and book, the church gets caught on fire, Pony and Johnny both go in to save the little kids. After they are considered heroes, Johnny broke his back and is in the hospital. After Ponyboy gets back home safely, the Socs and Greasers are planning a rumble. At the rumble, in the movie, it is raining, it never stated in the book that it was raining. At the end of the rumble the Greasers won. The Greasers won the rumble in the book and movie. After the greasers celebrate, Ponyboy and Dally go visit Johnny to tell him about their victory. Johnny was not impressed and his response was “Useless… fighting’s no good.” quoted from the movie and the book. Johnny’s last words that were both said in the movie and the book were, “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold”
As you can see, there are a lot of similarities and differences in the book and movie “The Outsiders”. This book was full of suspense and excitement as well as fear. The movie
