Dallas Winston is a member from a teen gang called the Greasers. The Socials, which is their enemy gang, get in a lot of disputes with the Greasers. However, Greasers Ponyboy and Johnny get into a bad fight with the Socials that results in the death of a Social member, so they have to hide. Dallas, or Dally for short, has to help his fellow Greaser friends get out of trouble. The Greasers have to face the consequences of their violent lives. Some Greasers meet tragic ends. In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Dallas Winston exemplifies the character traits of being tough, caring, and protective. Dally exemplifies the trait of being extremely tough. On page 22, Dally says, “I’m never nice.” This shows that he is very mean and tough, never allowing anyone to be superior to him. Dally always wants to be the winner and be at the top. He is not afraid to put someone else down if that helps him. Dally is not scared to fight anyone because he is very full of himself and feels that he is better than all of his opponents. …show more content…

He is caring to the ones he loves. For example, on page 149, Dally pleads, ‘“Damnit Johnny...' he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will. 'Oh, damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't die..’” This shows how much love Dally has for his friends. He might be very tough and strong on the outside, but on the inside he is very sympathetic and sorrowful to his loved ones. Dally has a really close connection with Johnny. Dally can relate to Johnny more than anyone else because they both come from broken families and homes. This shows that it was probably very hard for Dally to get through Johnny’s death because Johnny was the only person who really understood
