Compare and Contrast Essay. Divergent by Veronica Roth is a dystopian novel that is about a society that is divided into factions and about a teenagers self descovery. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is a coming of age novel that is set in the early 60s. It is a book about economic divides and how the divide affects society. While there are a number of differences between The Outsiders and Divergent, they both highlight the concept of family and societal divide. Divergent’s protagonist is called Beatrice. She’s a strong willed 16 year old girl who puts herself in front of her family when she is forced to choose between both. She is divergent, meaning that her mind is not controlled by the government, and even when Jeanine tried to control Tris, she couldn’t. The antagonist of divergent is called Jeanine, she is the leader of the most intelligent faction, Erudite. She uses her intelligence and power to make a controlling government. When Tris is 16 she has to choose between staying with her family or leaving to discover herself, she chooses herself and goes to the Dauntless faction where she has to train to become a Dauntless. Both the main characters go through self discovery. Tris in her new faction and Ponyboy when his friends die and he has to go through it alone.
