Doctors are infamous for their unreadable writing; Richard Selzer is not one of those doctors. A talented surgeon, Selzer has garnered critical acclaim for his captivating operating room tales, and rightfully so. A perfect exhibition of this is The Knife, a detailed illustration of a surgery. What may seem like an uninteresting event is made mesmerizing by Selzer’s magnificent account of the human body and the meticulousness that goes into repairing it. The rhetorical appeals, tone, and figurative language that Selzer uses throughout The Knife provide the reader with a vivid description of the sacred process of surgery.

During this searching, they found Seabiscuit to bring them hope. Seabiscuit is a racing horse that received the right trainer and rider to make him a legend. The pie by Gary Soto tells the story of a six years old boy. This boy lets the temptation get the best of him leading him to steal a pie. He struggles with the guilt throughout the story feeling as if he has disappointed everyone even though know one knew. Soto uses figurative language such as personification, allusion, metaphors, and similes to entertain the reader. His main intention is entertain but I can argue that he wrote the story to inform as well.
Many individuals have mixed feelings and emotions in life. There can be times when life can be draining and rough, but throughout all of this, everybody has felt the same way. In the novel “Look Both Ways” by Jason Reynolds, these hardships are widely displayed. Jason Reynolds writes about 10 different kids with a different perspective on society. Each of the kids has different difficulties and troubles they have to go through.

In chapter eighteen of the book Janie, Tea Cake, and Motor Boat are seeking to find safety from the hurricane. The author uses the word, “triple fury” to describe the storm. Stories are the foundation of relationships. They represent the shared lessons, the memories, and the feelings between people. But often times, those stories are mistakenly left unspoken; often times, the weight of the impending future mutes the stories, and what remains is nothing more than self-destructive questions and emotions that “add up to silence” (Lee. 23). In “A Story” by Li-Young Lee, Lee uses economic imagery of the transient present and the inevitable and fear-igniting future, a third person omniscient point of view that shifts between the father’s and son’s perspective and between the present and future, and emotional diction to depict the undying love between a father and a son shadowed by the fear of change and to illuminate the damage caused by silence and the differences between childhood and adulthood perception. “A Story” is essentially a pencil sketch of the juxtaposition between the father’s biggest fear and the beautiful present he is unable to enjoy.
The Past Dealt within the Future In Ray Bradbury’s “An Utterly Perfect Murder”, the author conveys that fear can cause an individual to let the past destroy their conscience and to seek revenge on those who have abused him. He was born well before his time, or so he thinks as he raises the bottle to his lips. “Miniver Cheevy” written by Edwin Arlington Robinson tells the life of a man who blames all of his problems on not being born in the Medieval Ages. The name of this man is also the namesake of the poem: Miniver Cheevy. Through his brilliant use of form, figurative language, and sound devices, Robinson portrays the theme of a wasted life and lonely life is often spent within fantasies in one’s head.
In this essay I argue that Wolfe is using the concept memory to interpret the idea of time wasting away through the detachment of wonder. The story contradicts what people consider to be normal memories. To many, a normal memory is something that happens with friends and family. Something that is extremely heartfelt.
