Geoffrey Chaucer is known as the father of English literature. In Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, a group of pilgrims travel together and tell tales to each other for entertainment. “The Pardoner’s Tale” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” are two stories from The Canterbury Tales. After evaluating both of these stories I have concluded the “The Pardoner’s Tale” is the superior story. “The Pardoner’s Tale” is the superior story because it is more entertaining, didactic, and effective. One reason “The Pardoner’s Tale” is better than “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is it is more entertaining. “The Pardoner’s Tale” is more entertaining because, “It’s of three rioters I have to tell who, long before the morning service bell, were sitting in a tavern for a drink” (Chaucer 58-60). Another reason it is more entertaining is when they kill each other, “And drank; and his companion, nothing loth, drank from it also, and they perished both” (Chaucer 288-289). An example of the moral from the tale is, “No longer was it Death the fellows sought, For they were all so thrilled to see the sight, The florins were so beautiful and bright, That down they sat beside the precious pile” (Chaucer 171-174). Another example from the tale is, “ What these two wretches suffered at their end. Thus these two murderers received their due, So did the treacherous young poisoner too “ (Chaucer 293-295). Everyone has experienced a moment in their life where they were a little too greedy. This tale showed the negative side of being greedy by having everyone of the drunk guys kill each other because of their greed. “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” did not have as good of moral lessons as “The Pardoner’s Tale”
