The pearl is a novella written by John Steinbeck and published in 1947. John Steinbeck was inspired by Mexican folk tale from La Paz where was full of pearl before, so he researched it and wrote this novella. Many people think that this novella is about human being’s greed and its tragic ending, but I intend to write how the protagonist Kino’s sense for nature was blinded and what factors have affected to modern people. Summary As I said previously, the story is based on Mexican folk tale, but the author created own characters and details. The protagonist Kino lived in La Paz with his family; his wife Juana and his child Coyotito. He was a pearl diver who was looking for pearls for living, and he loved his nature so much, so he used to go out to listen to “a song” from nature (it was not obviously said what the sound was, but it could be the sound of sea and wind itself). We do not take care of what we already had and what we already have anymore. All we are blinded by materialism, so we cut trees, build factories on there and waste natural sources for our convenience. We couldn’t blame on Kino, because we are doing same thing like him. Maybe some people would say that since we are already familiar with modern society, we can’t go back to primitive world like where native tribes live. I also agree with this opinion. I don’t know what I should do in forest, what I can do for living and how I can live like native tribes. However, what I really want to say is that we don’t have to go back to primitive world, but we have to pay close attention to surroundings where we are living now. Air was covered by fine dust, water was contaminated by factory wastes and soil was polluted by pesticide. This is what we are facing now.
