All Kino ever wanted is to marry his wife in a church, buy a rifle, and send Coyotito to school, but it all ended when his only son died in front of him. These are some things that happened in the fictional book, “The Pearl”. The Pearl is a novella by American author John Steinbeck, that was first published in 1947. It is the story of a pearl diver, Kino, who explores for “The Pearl of the World” in hopes and dreams, the Pearl slowly becomes evil which fills them in many dangers. The Pearl is set in a small fishing village in La Paz Mexico. The Pearl takes place in a small country town called La Paz on the Baja Peninsula. In this book, many things comes to Kino and his wife such as grief, greed, and death.

He would never let a tracker kill Coyotito. After Kino throws the Pearl in the ocean, he had no soul in him anymore, he couldn’t feel anything but grief, sadness and regret for the situation that had happened throughout the book. He has lost the feeling to feel guilt, so he didn 't regret abusing his wife or killing another man. After Kino kills a man, the thought of improving his family is lost—the only thing that remains is to save himself and his family. The Pearl also lets everyone’s greed to show.
When everybody heard that Kino had the pearl, the priest’s, the doctor’s, the neighbor’s and the agent’s greed started to show. The pearl gives Kino great importance within La Paz, as showed by the visit from the local Priest, the Doctor, and the neighbors. The hatred directed toward Kino and Juana takes two kinds: the first is a general jealousy from the community toward Kino for his luck, while the second is a more specific greed shown by those who want the pearl for themselves.
