Each family has their own structure and forms of expressing their thoughts and feelings, often related to the family’s background. Asian cultures often believe that certain matters are dealt with by adults or should not be discussed altogether. Often it is the adult’s job to keep certain pressures off their children, but if they are not careful, the weight can crush them. ‘He probably began to see me as a series of dos and don’ts’ (Page 265) Alice feels that her relationship with her parents impacts her relationships with others and this is again seen as a barrier her culture creates. ‘Don’t you feel frustrated sometimes?’ (Page 239) Alice observes the views Michael has of her relationship and she sees it to be different.
Taken from her perspective, “I could not tell my father what she had said” (Tan, 112). These lines show the great extent in which language barriers and lack of English fluency in 1st generation family members affected the St. Clairs, and how it resulted in miscommunications. Unlike the families in The Joy Luck Club, however, the 1st generation member(s) of the Amir family made an effort to blend in with American communities and refrained from staying in the same racial group; the interview states, “I try to blend in with the community by interacting, sharing my background, and learning new things”
The author particularly appears to be a person growing up in the first half of 20th century when the family values, ancestral connections, and the intimate norms were the things to be preserved. People act the way they are because of the external forces that affect them. Likewise throughout history, many authors and poets create their work of literatures based on the external forces. Often times, the message that these authors and poets reveals not only has universal themes, but also can connect to people’s life stories.
