Throughout the book, Brett reveals himself as a tough, hero willing to do anything such as defending and protecting patrols overnight. Not until later in the book, Jack (member of Brett 's squad) was injured and taken to Dr. Morgan 's clinic. He reported that Jack had been severely injured and could not do anything about him because of the mass amount of internal bleeding. From, Addie having an affair to most of her family travelling to Jefferson for selfish reasons. The Bundren family is a lying and selfish family. Most of the characters betray Addie specifically in many ways.

In the chapter “The Man I Killed”, Tim O’Brien explores the importance of friendship and how emotional support can have a positive impact on a friendship. The chapter outlines Tim’s regret after he killed a young Vietnamese soldier, and his friend Kiowa is there to listen and stick up for him. After O´Brien is distressed after killing the soldier, the nearby soldier Azar makes jokes about how Tim ¨shredded the soldier¨ with a tone that O´Brien does not appreciate. Harper Lee’ novel, To Kill A Mockingbird is an explosion of literary genius surrounding one of America’s darkest hours; a time that man turned against itself and brothers waged war. The entire book revolves around a quote stating that “It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” This quote is both intriguing and blunt: It is a sin to harm the innocent. Throughout the book, Lee exemplifies this by using minor characters that end up playing a large role to the reader. Mayella Ewell’s character seems pretty straight-forward if you skim through the plot.

The first sign of betrayal is shown when Tom Driscoll sends his mother down the river after she specifically requests him not to. His mother was giving up her life in order to convenience him with only two requests: That Tom would return in a year to buy her free and that he would sell her up North. Tom betrays her and sells her down the river without hesitation. Judge Driscoll is also betrayed by Tom in Pudd’nhead Wilson. He spends many years of his life providing for Tom as his own son.
Betrayal: the act of betraying someone or something or the fact of being betrayed: violation of a person's trust or confidence, of a moral standard, etc. (Merriam Webster.) Betrayal, at its core, is change, disappointment, and pain. It is about the subversion of expectations, where what is given is far less than what is expected. In literary works, it is a simple device used to drive plots forward and create complex characters.
The book shows many aspect of betrayals happened to the characters in the story. Linda, whitey, Geraldine -Joe’s mother-, and Joe, each one of them had exposure to betrayal in their own way. However Joe -the main character- in the story faced many of betrayals from his father or the tribal authorities. Those betrayals had influenced in his actions and behaviors.
The final guilt Amir struggles with is his guilt of apathy where he physically commits the action and instead of standing as a bystander becomes the person who committed the act, which gives him a different form of guilt. Amir feels apathy guilt through betraying his friend and kicking Hassan out of the house because he is a witness to the crime Amir has committed. Amir has guilt because he chases Hassan out, “I flinched, like I’d been slapped… Then I understood: This was Hassan’s final sacrifice for me… And that led to another understanding: Hassan knew.
