Jealousy Is a Disease
Sometimes people cannot control the way they feel about certain people. No matter how many times they try to suppress their inner feeling eventually their true feelings begin to show. For instance, on Hassan’s birthday Baba hires a plastic surgeon to fix Hassan's cleft lip to which Amir discloses "I wished I too had some kind of scar they would beget Baba's sympathy. It wasn't fair. Hassan hadn't done anything to earn Baba's affection; he'd just been born with that stupid harelip." He feels Hassan doesn’t deserve Baba’s sympathy and that he is facing injustice since he cannot compete with Hassan’s scar. Moreover, Amir does not sympathize with Hassan’s facial defect and sees it as a way of stealing the care he deserves from Baba. He blames Hassan for being born with a harelip and sees it as an advantage.
