In the very beginning of The Plague every character that’s mentioned seems to be selfish and only worried getting out of Oran. Once they understood that the plague was a serious disease and could possibly kill the whole town everyone started to come together. The plague allowed everyone to grasp that there is more important stuff in life other than themselves and their careers. The change of some of the main characters were tremendous. By the end of the book many were totally different people and changed for the better. Before they realize the plague was amongst them they only worried about working. They hardly had time to themselves to just relax and enjoy themselves. The reason being people were getting drunk and acting wilder than usual because they weren’t used to any of the things that were happening. Father Paneloux made them think the plague happened because of their sins, but the evil that happens is this world most of the time has a hidden agenda. Everything is believed to happen for reason; not everyone sees it as soon as evil happens. Allah places hardship in people lives to transform them from a religious stand point. He came off as very self-centered in the beginning. He offered money to criminals to help get him out of Oran. When all failed and he realized he was stuck there he started to become a responsible adult. He decided that he would stay and help Dr. Rieux. He thought about how his wife would feel if she knew he left during the horrible time Oran was having. “Rambert replied ‘But it may be shameful to be happy by oneself’” (Camus 209). Rambert was no longer the selfish boy he was in the beginning of this “evil” situation. He was now a man with a caring heart for others. Rambert now understood nothing goods come out of just worry about his self; the plague helped understand
