The Popular Mechanics

Dear Classmates, I am delighted to share with you this fascinating story titled, ‘The popular mechanics’ by Raymond Carver.

The crux of this story is about a broken relationship between a man and his woman, as well as the fierce fight over who takes the custody of their only beloved male child. It all began in a winter day and the sun was beginning set, the story did not elucidate the bone of contention between a man and his woman, but all hell broke loose when he began packing his clothes inside his suitcase, and his woman, maybe his wife came in standing at the door saying, “I’m glad you’re leaving! I’m glad you’re leaving!” (Carver, 2014, p. 1), not minding her, he kept on putting his clothes inside the suitcase. Consequently, after packing his clothes, demanded for the baby. This singular request overwhelm his ‘wife’, who therefore adjusted and transfixed her standing position, ready for a fight and further more responded calmly that he is not going to touch the baby (Carver, 2014, p. 1). Therefore, family war broke out resulting in series of shovelling and scuffling that turn the angel baby “red-faced and screaming” (carver, 2014, p. 2). Finally, masculinity prevailed; he overpowered her, took the baby and escaped, consequently leaving the woman in a state of anarchy. …show more content…

Forcefully taking the baby away is an act of barbarism. It is a crime against women. “In most cases like this, determination ultimately falls to the discretion of a family court judge who must decide what is the best interest of the child” (Paquin, 2011, P.4).
