In the puritan community, they have many rules. As a puritan, they have to stay in pure and follow all that puritan rules. As a puritan person, it is important for stay in a clear and honest life. However, under such strait administration, people’s human nature make us to broke the rules. Then, that make the evil things open them mouth and tempt people make mistake.

The mysterious traveler’s staff is also a living serpent, “ that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself like a living serpent” (Hawthorne 11). The snake staff in this point means human nature to broke rules. Goody Cloyse is a witch, and she absolutely uses the broomstick to flying. Also, the old man give her his snake staff, Goodman brown saw Goody Cloyse disappear immediately. In any case, Goody Cloyse is old lady, she can not gone so soon, The snake staff must be her new broomstick helps her flies to the meeting. The snake staff means evil power of the witch. “with his hand on the open Bible, of the sacred truths of our religion” (Hawthorne 19). At the last part of story, the author related to Bible. In here, Hawthorne try to tells the snake staff was related to to the Bible. The Snake tempts Eve and Adam to eat the apple from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The Snake staff means the temptation from the devil. Devil was human fall down hell, it tricking, lying and playing with human. Also, human carry the original sin, it is human nature.
