The Vietnam War was the longest war in U.S history that resulted in nearly 60,000 American death and an estimated cost of war exceeding $176 billion. The overextended war tore the nation apart and grossly changed the public view about the government, military, institution and the media. The war, which started under the Presidency of Kennedy, continued under the Presidency of Johnson and Nixon. It was President Kennedy who, to support the South's government, sent in 2,000 military advisors initiating the involvement of America. President Lyndon Johnson further escalated the war and though the next president, Richard Nixon, advocated withdrawing U.S. troops from Vietnam but it took more many years before the troops were finally withdrawn.
