Anonymity and its worldly Impacts Does anonymity affect behavior? In the story, “The Possibility of Evil” Shirley Jackson explores this question. Jackson’s main character, Miss. Strangeworth, treats Mr. Lewis kindly and is social with him in public but accuses his grandson of lifting money from his store when she is anonymous. When he is helping her out she says “Yes, thank you, Mr. Lewis, such a lovely day, isn’t it?” (Jackson 2). However, when she goes back home to write her letter she then writes that “Mr. Lewis would never have imagined for a minute that his grandson might be lifting petty cash from the store register if he had not had one of Miss. Like the example of the #MeToo movement as described in the previous paragraph, I have seen anonymity have a positive impact when people have created Go fund Me’s, and petitions anonymously in order to help others in need for many reasons. I once came across an online petition where people can sign to make a change anonymously. This was a case in which they were petitioning to put someone in jail in order for someone to gain justice over a similar situation as the #MeToo movement. This shows that when people are given the option to make a change in the comfort of their own devices, they are more likely to do it anonymously for their own personal reasons. Although the article by truiloo.com describes an example of the negative impact of anonymity, I have not seen any negative aspects of anonymity. I think this because I personally disassociate myself from such situations that can potentially lead me into any type of trouble. With anonymity being particularly on social media, I see something coming from someone anonymous. For example, when I have once seen someone speak badly about another I felt the need to step away from the situation.
