Has our nation ever thought about how the government could be manipulating people in believing in anything with the power of language? That is exactly what the book, 1984 by George Orwell does. The government in 1984 controls their people with the fear of having no privacy. In a result from not having privacy, the government can tell who is going against the Party and if they talk bad about the Party then they will be taken away and “vaporized”. Also, if the people do not believe in everything the Party says then they also will be taken away. In 1984, George Orwell shows the readers that the destruction of language and the past can be used as tools to manipulate people in believing in anything such things as, forcing society to speak only one language, putting up posters to persuade the people to believe in this saying …show more content…
One way on how the power of language can manipulate society into believing in anything is by forcing every single person into speaking one language. The language that is spoken in 1984 is called Newspeak. Once World War Two came to an end the government of Oceania make a decision that they should put fear into every single one of their people's lives. They did this by putting a telescreen in everyone’s house and the government can spy on them by doing this. This causes the people to not say anything bad about the government aka the Party. To completely get rid of the past they also make a decision to create a new language which is Newspeak. Newspeak is used to get rid of all the bad and negative words in the dictionary
