Liz Addison, who graduated from Piedmont Virginia Community College and Southern Maine Community College agreed that community college was better than a university. Addison believed that a four-year college was for the “privileged class”. Addison viewed universities as the “privileged class” due to students applying at their curriculum vitae. In addition, Liz Addison tells the importance of community college. Addison then goes on to tell how high school graduates have a hard time getting into universities; the odds of entering would be low.

The idea that education is a critical component of acquiring an eminent lifestyle has dated back since premodern times. Individuals are now constantly enrolling in postsecondary institutions in hopes of attaining endless opportunities along with the implied benefits that results from a college degree. Nevertheless, a college education is, unfortunately, not accessible to all people. In “The Diploma Divide,” Kassie Bracken explores the major disparity among low income students and their affluent counterparts on obtaining a postsecondary degree in the U.S. With the employment of an alluring appeal to one’s emotions, a use of despondent word choices to establish a dispirited ambience, and a distinguished platform to elucidate the author’s thoughts, Kassie effectively promoted her argument on how a college education is not attainable for all individuals.
We must find a positive way to incorporate their backgrounds into our classroom and level the playing field of education so that these students are all on the same
Community College is a new beginning for everyone that enrolls. The access to college allows them to broaden their minds, discover their passions, and push themselves forward. Community college opens doors for their students that they would never have believed that they were there before. It gives the students a chance to explore and see what they are truly wanting to do with their lives. Addison writes, “Just follow any one of the 1,655 road signs, and pop your head inside - yes, they let anyone in – and there you will find discoveries of a first independent film, a first independent thought, a first independent study.
Although my grades were not always consistent, I never earned less than a B for a final grade in my English courses. Often my instructors privately told me that my papers were the best in the class and shared my work with others. My writing secured me a free trip to London and Paris with my business club as well as my acceptance into multiple colleges. I am certain my extracurricular activities, including cheerleading, volleyball, community service projects, fundraisers and employment also played a vital role in these accomplishments. Of all the schools to which I applied, only VSU waitlisted me probably because of my phobia about standardized examinations, which caused me not to perform as well as I should have on the SAT.
First-Generation Students to Academic Success Research shows that in the Washington post a reporter by the name of Linda Bank-Santali stated that over 4.5 Million First –Generation Students have enrolled in a post-secondary institution in the United States (Bank-Santali, 2015, para. ). Not all First –Generation College Students are all the same but many experience difficulty with four distinct domains 1) professional 2) financial 3) psychological 4) academic. First Generation Students have a lot on their plates and face many obstacles that keep them from succeeding in college. There are many Barriers that first generation students face such as Low-Income status, Lack of Motivation and Low-Self Esteem.
Can Two Be Greater Than Four? Does college really matter? Has college lost its rite to passage appeal? Can one still go to college and be successful in the pursuit of self-discovery? These are the types of questions that Liz Addison challenges in her short essay “Two Years Are Better Than Four”. By taking into account my own experience as a current community college student and advocate, in this response to Addison’s essay I choose to elaborate on her views of community college being better than a four year university in the sense of offering a better college experience.
In the United States a community college is defined as a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a particular area. They are post secondary schools and are also referred to as junior colleges, vocational or technical schools because generally the course of study is for two years. The student can earn an associates degree or certification and/or continue their education by transfering to a four year college to complete their educational pursuits and earn a Bachelor 's degree. Community colleges started in the late 1800’s and have grown and evolved over the years. Today many four year colleges and universities have become so expensive to attend that many prospective students are opting for the more affordable alternative of a community college for their first two years of study where they can save money by living at home and taking classes that will transfer to a four year institution, however, there are students that cannot afford the lower cost of community colleges.

According to, (Niche) Reed College is “5 of 433 Best college with no Application fee in America, 13 of 181 best colleges for Anthropology in America, and 13 of 441 best colleges for Art in America.” So, judging by the information Niche is saying the school that Steve Jobs went to is a very good school. To add some more support to what I was saying is that according to (Niche) “ Is A+ in Academics, A in Value, A in Diversity, B+ on Campus, NG for Athletics, and B+ for party scene.”
Picking to attend a Community college for me is the best choice that I picked for my education. Community colleges provide a great service to students in many more ways other than just education. They help students who are unsure what they want to do or are unable to attend a four year university. Community Colleges also provide continuing education even after they have gotten a degree and a job.

As I reflect on the past 15 months of attending CCU. I recall the excitement, and the overwhelming stress of having to work full time and attend online college. I was not sure that I could complete my degree at fifty years old. Because of being out of school for over 30 years. I was somewhat reluctant to give it a try.
All children can learn and be successful. All the rest of my philosophy of education grows out of this simple and powerful statement. The future of our society is based upon our ability to change and grow. The skills and knowledge required in the future must enable citizens to take change in stride.
According to Good Shepherd Services (GSS) website ((Good Shepherds Services), their transfer school program has been developed in 50/50 partnership with the NYC Department of Education (DOE). This program serves young people between the ages of 16 and 21 who dropped out of school and think of coming back (usually over-age students); students who were not successful in regular school and off-track to graduating before they turn 21; usually students who enroll into the transfer school program have 50% less credits they would normally need to graduate on time. The “nationally recognized transfer high school model integrates the youth development practices and expertise of Good Shepherd within a rigorous, standards-based instructional setting”
