The social issue I have chosen is pet adoption and why people should choose this way of finding an animal companion, as opposed to buying. Across the United States, there is an overpopulation or a mistreatment of dogs and cats every day. This leads to animal shelters and humane societies to take in these animals and care for them as much as they can. Animal shelter intakes are anything from those picked up from animal control, surrendered by owners, or filed reports of cruelty. In the United States, approximately 5-12 million companion animals enter animal shelters annually and approximately 1-4 million are euthanized, although this varies from state to state and the policy of the animal shelter. The local non-profit organization I found that helps this cause is the Wood County Humane Society in Bowling Green, Ohio (WCHS). The shelter was founded in 1904, and is a nonprofit, limited admission organization. They rely on donations and contributions of the wood county community and do not receive any funds from the ASPCA or Humane Society of the United States for daily operations.
