Automatic handguns were introduced by Joseph Laumann in 1892, guns have proved to be beneficial for military and protective purposes. The United States makes up less than five percent of the world’s population, however, Americans account for forty-eight percent of the civilian-owned guns worldwide. Given this statement, Americans also account for owning the most guns per capita than residents in any other country. Despite the number of guns, the United States owns, America does not account for the most deaths. According to the World Atlas, the top five countries who are responsible for firearm related deaths occur in Honduras, Venezuela, Swaziland, Guatemala, and Jamaica, interestingly enough, the United States is not even in the top twenty, however, they rank number one for developed countries (Pariona, 2017). Honduras reported to have the highest homicide rate and 78.6 percent of all homicides are by gun, an estimated 67 firearm-related deaths per 100,000 people occur annually (Pariona, 2017).
