Books are an essential way to gain knowledge whether they are controversial or not. Thousands of books have been banned from public libraries and schools due to being deemed ‘inappropriate’ by parents, administrators, or religious leaders. Whether Americans should ban books in public libraries and schools is an often debated topic. This censorship of books is dangerous, as it restricts the American people's’ ability to access information, leaving Americans ignorant. Historically, banning books is not a new practice.
Books can show kids the struggles of real people and can teach them empathy and sympathy for these people. When you take away these books children have a narrow view on life and won’t be able to look through other people’s perspectives. In the article, ‘The Negative Effects of Book Banning in the Classroom’, the author, Chiesa says, “When individuals restrict their children from reading certain books, they can't enforce those beliefs onto other children and families. Banning books has the potential to create gaps in knowledge for young learners.” Children will learn less if they are restricted from reading certain books and these restrictions can also affect children in the same classroom.
Banning books discourages the freedom of thought. Books are one of the main sources of learning. A few authors believe their books are being targeted. For example, black authors' books are being challenged because some contain racial history and a few parents believe those books
Why do people ban books? Banned books are books that parents, teachers, schools, and local legislature challenge, which are sometimes taken off of shelves for including graphic language, sex, drinking, drugs, and profanity. Books shouldn’t be banned for all children. I believe that if parents have a problem with a book, then they should just ban it for their own children. What parents consider to be bad “varies and depends on their unique situation, family and values”(PABBIS).
Legally, people have no jurisdiction over what or what cannot be available to the public. In other words, it is most certainly illegal to physically take a book away from a place or by any other means, obviously, other than in court. While in actuality, social pressure is an easy way to exploit groups into complying with specific actions. “Censorship” Compton’s by Britannica reads,” people opposed to certain books have attempted to prevent them from being read by removing them from school reading lists and persuading librarians not to buy the books and booksellers not to stock them.” In any sense, since books/texts are a form of speech, they are protected by the first amendment making banning them or any sort of censoring impossible due to such books/texts being protected; At least, that’s how it should be enforced according to the law.
“Let readers be leaders” is the motto of Martha Hickinson, a school librarian who after hearing completely compelling and false statements about books at a school board meeting rallied and gathered around four hundred other people against the ban to speak out. There were speeches by adults and even students, and the fight dragged on where Hickinson received an immense amount of hate but in the end, the book was restored. This is a demonstration of how one person can change a lot. Overall, book banning is an ongoing issue happening right now. It is not only happening in schools, but at a national level.

There are countless reasons that everybody should know why books are being banned all over the world! One of the reasons is that parents do not want their children to be exposed to inappropriate topics. Moreover, some books discusses topics that people object to like dark arts and homosexuality. However, there are also reasons why books should not be banned. When children enjoy books, it improves their vocabulary, and it teaches them life lessons.

People can still read these books just not at a young age, this also should not stop authors from writing books such as To Kill a Mockingbird.
At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself. Banning a book from a school or public library could go against a person’s First Amendment of the freedom of press.

Intro 1: What if your young child is looking through a book at your public library and comes across a topic that was way too mature for their mind set. Would you be okay with it? A big controversial issue that has been going on in the past year is if books should be banned. Now, no one is trying to banish libraries across the globe but people have requested to ban books that are inappropriate. This matter has grown to be worse because everyone has an opinion.
