What are birth-control pills? Birth-control pills are a form of hormonal contraception that prevent women from getting pregnant. They are taken once a month and are ninety-nine point nine percent effective. There are many other forms of birth-control that are available to both men and women ("Birth Control Pill: Side Effects, Effectiveness, How the Pill Works, and Types" Web). However, the method that has been debated the most is the birth-control pill. Women around the country have been asking why birth-control pills are not readily available, without a prescription, like tylenol and ibuprofen. Some people may believe that it is unwise to use medication that alters hormone levels without consulting a licensed physician, or that a patient and doctor should discuss using any type of medication long term. Many teens are afraid of their parents finding out that they are thinking of being sexually active. They are worried about the barrage questions they may face, “Why do you need birth-control,” “Are you having sex?” This discourages teens from even asking about the pill. The pill is one of the best forms of birth-control available. It is always recommended to use two forms of birth-control, commonly the pill and a condom. However, in the heat of the moment, some couples do not think of using a condom and, if the female is not on the pill there is an increased chance of pregnancy. The number of teen pregnancies have dropped significantly since the early nineties, but today’s numbers are still considered high, even though there are plenty of preventative measures. Approximately 20,000 pregnancies, between the ages of fifteen and nineteen, occurred in 2014("About Teen Pregnancy" Web).
